Legal papers required for US citizens to be married in Greece

1. PASSPORT COPY OF BRIDE AND GROOM.

2. FULL BIRTH CERTIFICATES OF BRIDE AND GROOM.

Both parties are obliged to provide a full Birth Certificate. Shorter versions will not be accepted.

3. CERTIFICATE OF NO IMPEDIMENT TO MARRIAGE OF BRIDE AND GROOM.

This document confirms that you have not been married and that you are free to be married. This document can be issued at your local Registrar's office and it must not be issued more than three months prior to your wedding. (click HERE to see an example of the required document).

4. AFFIDAVITS CONFIRMING YOU ARE TO FREE TO MARRY/ FOR BRIDE AND GROOM.

This a declaration that you are free to marry and that there is no impediment preventing you to enter into a valid marriage contract in Greece. Your own names and dates, would need to appear on your original as is shown on the example provided for you, thereafter you will need to have the documents stamped by a Notary Public Office and obtain the mandatory Apostille stamp for it. 5. DIVORCE CERTIFICATE IF ANY.

In the case that one or both sides has been divorced, you are obligated to obtain this Certificate.

6. OFFICIAL DOCUMENT ABOUT CHANGING THE NAME, IF ANY.

7. ADOPTION CERTIFICTES, IF ANY.

8. APOSTILLE STAMPS

This stamp which is mandatory refers to the legalization and validating of your documents for international use. (1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents).

The Apostille Stamp is necessary, to validate and legalize the Birth Certificates,Certificates of no Impediment to marry and Affidavits /Free to Marry.

Please contact your local authorities and enquire where you may obtain the official Apostille Stamp, in the USA. All documents must be translated and certified at your local Greek Embassy/ Consulate in your country. Translation services are available at such offices.

Please confirm that your all documents and paperwork are in order at least four weeks before your departure from your country. Thereafter all originals must be carried to Greece with you and readily available.

You will be required to stay in Greece at least 1(one) working day after your wedding, in order to go to the Town Hall to sign your Marriage Certificate. Thereafter it will be forwarded to you by post from the specific Town Hall.
