Legal Papers for Australian citizens to be married in Greece

1. COPY OF THE PASSPORTS OF THE BOTH PARTIES.

2. FULL BIRTH CERTIFICATES OF BRIDE AND GROOM.

Both parties are obliged to provide full Birth Certificate. Short versions will not be accepted.

3. CERTIFICATE OF NON IMPEDIMENT (CNI) FOR BOTH PARTIES FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE.

This document confirms that you have not been married and that you are free to marry. This document must not be issued more then three months prior to your wedding date. For more information on how to obtain a CNI. please go to the webpage smartraveller.gov.au - Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade where you will locate the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia / General Requirements for Marriage overseas, where you will be informed as to how you may obtain a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage.

4. NO RECORDS RESULT FROM THE REGISTRAR OF BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES FOR BOTH.

Not older than 3 months before the date of your wedding.

5. DIVORCE CERTIFICATE IF ANY.

In such case that any of the parties is divorced, please provide a certified copy of the Decree Absolute.

6. OFFICIAL DOCUMENT ABOUT CHANGING THE NAME IF ANY.

7. ADOPTION CERTIFICATES, IF ANY.

8. APOSTILLE STAMP.

This official stamp refers to the legalization and validating of your documents for international use. (1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents). The Apostille Stamp is mandatory and is necessary to legalize and validate your Birth Certificates, Certificates of no Impediment to marry and No Records document.

Please contact your local authorities who will instruct you where to obtain the official Apostille Stamp, in Australia.

All documents must be translated at the Greek Embassy / Consulate in Australia, where translation services are available.

Please ensure that all your documents are in order at least four weeks prior to your departure.

Original documents need to be carried with you to Greece once they have been declared in order.

You will be required to be in Greece for at least 1(one) working day after the wedding to register the wedding to sign your Marriage Certificate at the local Town Hall after which the registrar at the Town Hall will send you the Marriage Certificate by post.
